چکیده

IS INSOMNIA A DISORDER OF AROUSAL? Prevalence of Insomnia Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. Its prevalence varies according to the definition. One-fourth to one-third of the general population reports complaints of difficulty with falling and/or staying asleep whereas ten percent seek medical help for insomnia. Insomnia occurs more frequently with increasing age, in women, in patients of lower socioeconomic status, and those reporting psychologic disturbances. Further, insomnia is associated with increased morbidity, including hypertension, as well as with the potential development of major psychiatric disorders. Chronic insomnia is difficult to treat and has major psychosocial consequences, including its frequent negative impact on the patient’s family and employment.

Differential topical susceptibility to TGFβ in intact and injured regions of the epithelium: key role in myofibroblast transition

Induction of epithelial-myofibroblast transition (EMyT), a robust fibrogenic phenotype change hallmarked by α-smooth muscle actin (SMA) expression, requires transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ) and the absence/uncoupling of intracellular contacts. This suggests that an "injured" epithelium may be topically susceptible to TGFβ. To explore this concept, we use an epithelial wound model in which i...

β-Catenin and Smad3 regulate the activity and stability of myocardin-related transcription factor during epithelial–myofibroblast transition

Injury to the adherens junctions (AJs) synergizes with transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ) to activate a myogenic program (α-smooth muscle actin [SMA] expression) in the epithelium during epithelial-myofibroblast transition (EMyT). Although this synergy plays a key role in organ fibrosis, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully defined. Because we recently showed that Smad3 inhibits myoc...

Adaptive Tunable Vibration Absorber using Shape Memory Alloy

This study presents a new approach to control the nonlinear dynamics of an adaptive absorber using shape memory alloy (SMA) element. Shape memory alloys are classified as smart materials that can remember their original shape after deformation. Stress and temperature-induced phase transformations are two typical behaviors of shape memory alloys. Changing the stiffness associated with phase tran...

1. Review of SMA. Selective Modal Analysis (SMA) is a physically motivated framework for understanding, simplifying and analyzing complex linear time invariant models of dynamic systems. SMA can focus on selected portions of the structure and behaviour of the system [1, 2]. In many physical systems, it can be readily recognized that some set of modes is asociated to a certain set of variables. ...
